 Introduction

The Keshava Deva Malaviya Institute of Petroleum Exploration (KDMIPE), loca-ted at Dehra Dun in the picturesque Doon valley, was set up in 1962 as a research and training institute. The institute continues to be the country's premier centre for basic and applied research in petroleum exploration.

It caters to the research
needs of ONGC's operating regions in the field of geosciences for petroleum exploration, and development of alternate sources of energy.

The objectives of the Institute are:

Synergistic geoscientific studies for understanding habitat of petroleum and identification of
    prospective petroliferous areas

Appraisal of potential hydrocarbon resources

Basin evaluation and development of exploration concepts and models

Management of centralized database and exploration informatics through countrywide E&P data
    network (EPINET)

Development of frontier technologies and state-of-the-art methodologies

Harnessing of alternate energy resources

Exploration efforts review for short term strategic and long term prospective plans

 Functions

The Institute undertakes collaborative projects with universities and other institutes of India and abroad. It also provides consultancy sevices besides work association facilities with national and international organizations.

The Eremenko Library in KDMIPE houses a collection of 31,000 books, 11,000 journals and various CD-ROMs in the field of petroleum sector. The Core Research Centre has five core libraries organized by CORIS software for the available collection of 2,16,000 well cutting samples, over 23,000m of cores and 50,000 surface samples from various basins of India and overseas.

KDMIPE also contributed to value generation and has been a constant partner in establishing over 6 billion tonnes of oil & oil equivalent gas while maintaining an overall success ratio of l:3 in terms of exploratory wells over the last two decades in ONGC.

During the past five years, the Institute has completed over 850 projects, out of which as many as 380 were contractual. In addition, the institute has mapped over 340 prospects with techno economic viability in different basins. Drilling of some of these prospects have led to the hydrocarbon discoveries in more than 20 locations.

The Institute is moving ahead on the quality performance path and has been accredited with the ISO-9001 Certificate.

The functions of the Institute can be classified under three major areas:

Petroleum Economics & Foreign Appraisal

Geoscience Research

Basin Research
